how long were you in an abusive relationship? how did you get out of it ?
I’ve had these questions sitting in my inbox for months on end, wholly intending to answer them in a YouTub video but I’ve just been insanely busy the last few months so I’m deciding to answer them now.
I was only in the relationship for approximately 2-3 months, I don’t really remember exactly.
It was long distance (I live in Dublin and she lived in “London”) and as it gradually got worse and worse I resented the idea of going over, but I didn’t know how to get out of it. So I went over for the second time. I went over on December 26th and I was supposed to leave on the 3rd or 4th of January. But I ended up begging my parents to book me a flight home on the 30th of December because I couldn’t handle it anymore. I told her my Nana was sick (which she I) because I knew I couldn’t do it at that moment in time. So I managed to get away and get to the airport, but unfortunately my flight was cancelled. So I had to go back to her apartment and we actually ended up spending the night in her friend’s house with a big group. She was a completely different person in front of them and it blew my fucking mind. I thought maybe I didn’t need to go home. But the next day, we went back to her place and it turned to shit again. My parents booked me another flight and when I told her I was leaving for good, she locked herself in the bathroom and kept screaming and crying. I left the apartment and she followed me down into the little village near her place and followed me into a shop where I was buying a box of cigarettes (she made me quit) she started screaming at me in the middle of this little corner shop. We went outside and she cornered me up against the shop window. She started crying and screaming and I walked away. She stood face first up against the window for a good 20 minutes. Of course I felt fucking horrible but the weight that was lifted off of my shoulders that day was insane. I’m not gonna lie and say I didn’t try and fix things when I got home, because I did. I felt lost and alienated without her. I wasn’t allowed to hang out with certain people (with no reasoning) and she demanded all of my attention, so in the short time we dated, I hadn’t really seen my friends. I tried to run back but I’m glad it didn’t work. My friends were still there for me, thank god.
